It’s once again time for San Antonians to give vent to our ongoing obsession with the quirkily macabre work of auteur Tim Burton, via the seventh annual Burton Ball. From Pee-wee’s Big Adventure to Beetlejuice, from Edward Scissorhands to The Nightmare Before Christmas, from Sweeney Todd to Big Fish, the writer/director has created a whole, delightfully dark and subversive universe in the course of his near-40-year career. And, we, as a city known for being off-kilter and maybe a tad attached to all things goth, are totally here for it. This year, the Burton Ball, a party celebrating the expansive and odd Burton-verse, is happening in December to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Burton’s beloved stop-motion animation The Nightmare Before Christmas. As in years past, this special event will feature themed decor, spooky dance music, live Burton-inspired art, art vendors, food trucks, unique drinks (for all ages), and a costume contest (also for all ages) wherein the winners across categories can nab their share of $500 in cash prizes.
