If Radiohead’s In Rainbows was a surprisingly optimistic snapshot of the world, then The Eraser — released by RH frontman Thom Yorke the year before — is definitely the photonegative. Yorke downloaded an OK Computer’s-worth of paranoia and hung it on bones of minimal laptop bleeps, proving once and for all that he’s not some posing, beat-making tourist.

So consider The Eraser Rmxs an even bigger cred-builder. Like all remix comps, it’s hit-and-miss: Four Tet successfully warms up “Atoms for Peace” with acoustic drums and shimmering keyboards; elsewhere, Various regrettably chops and screws “Analyse” into sound-collage territory. Cristian Vogel gets two cracks at “Black Swan,” sticking close to the original on one version, but looping Yorke’s weary refrain of “this is fucked up” on the second. It’s weird, but in the “Yes We Can” era (a welcome change from the “Oh No You Didn’t” years), The Eraser’s dystopian outlook hasn’t aged well. I’ll take In Rainbows over “And it Rained All Night” any day — gloom and doom is so 2006.
