The Fast Foodie 

Fortunately I wasn’t in a hurry when I went to Presa Street Grill. The menu advertises, “Your meal will be prepared fresh and made to order,” which actually meant it took about 20 minutes for a couple of sandwiches to arrive at our table. Don’t get me wrong; if you’ve got the time to spare, it’s a great place to catch up with an old friend as you wait for the meal to hit the table. And the food is pretty good, too.

The menu is ordinary, nothing too farfetched for a Texas-style lunch spot: burgers and chicken sandwiches dressed up in a few different (but not so different) ways, subs, and salads.

The pico-jack chicken sandwich is OK. If, like me, you prefer the char taste of the grill, you’ll love the way the chicken’s prepared, but the pico lacks serious flavor. It was basically diced tomato with a few bits of diced red onion. Disappointingly, not even a hint of lime, salt, or cilantro came through.

The turkey sandwich, served with bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, ranch, and pepper-jack cheese was a definite hit. Presa Street Grill sure is generous with the avocado, so lovers of the mushy green fruit will be ecstatic. My side choice, the cilantro coleslaw, made with vinegar rather than a mayo base, was curiously delicious. The pasta salad was appetizing as well, tasting of Italian dressing with bits of tomato and onion, but it was nothing compared to that scrumptious slaw.

Maybe the chili would’ve been better on the chiliburger rather than in a cup by itself. It’s topped off with the aforementioned pico, jalapeños, and mozzarella, but if it isn’t prefab, they do a great job of imitating that flavor — which admittedly, some people really like.

A few pieces of painted art hang on brightly colored walls, along with a mounted deer head dressed in flowers, and a display of Texas license plates makes passing the time interesting enough. Just don’t go on a half-hour lunch break and steer clear of the pico. But the slaw — that refreshing cup of tasty goodness — is a must-order.
