Set in 15th-century Paris, Victor Hugo’s Gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame conjures a bizarre love quadrangle surrounding Esmeralda, an alluring and kind-hearted gypsy dancer who’s pursued by an archdeacon, a captain and Quasimodo — a deaf, deformed bell-ringer sequestered in a tower at Notre-Dame Cathedral. First produced in Berlin as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame, Walt Disney Theatrical’s musical version strikes an unexpected balance by combining songs from the 1996 Disney film with decidedly dark overtones and original passages from Hugo’s novel.
