The Mayoral Horse Race

With Mayor Julián Castro moving on to the White House (cabinet, people, let’s not get ahead of ourselves), the 2015 Mayor’s race suddenly got real. Among a packed field of contenders—mainly already on City Council—some are making moves as others wait in the wings. District 9’s newly elected John Krier has indicated he’s not interested (oh, really?) and District 10’s Mike Gallagher is way too new. According to the Express-News, District 7’s Cris Medina may be interested and District 3’s Rebecca Viagran has kept mum for now. While District 5 and District 4 reps Shirley Gonzales and Rey Saldaña have thus far made good impressions, they seem to know they’re too politically untested for now. District 2’s Ivy Taylor could take on the interim mayor position, which is unelected, if District 8’s Ron Nirenberg doesn’t pass her by. Ray Lopez, practically an elder statesman from District 6, in interested in both the interim and the elected mayoral term. District 1’s Diego Bernal seems like he’s been running for mayor since his first council race, but the unexpected entrance of likeminded State Rep. Mike Villarreal (number 11 on the track), has complicated matters for now.
