The Most Exciting Restaurants and Bars Opening in San Antonio in 2020
The 2010s may be over, but we're moving into the new decade with full force. While all of the details may not yet be hashed out, here are the restaurants — so far — that we can look forward to dining and drinking at this year.

It’s a great year for barbecue in the Alamo City. Freight Gallery will soon be home to Bandit BBQ, as pitmaster Brandon Peterson brings breakfast and craft BBQ to the Southtown art space in early 2020.

Austin Street Pizza & Craft Beer
For Guillermo Garza, owner of the popular downtown restaurant Guillermo’s, simple is best. The restaurateur is dedicated to creating a pizza joint with simple seating, great slices and craft brews at 1214 Austin Street.

Southerleigh Bird & Biscuit
Southerleigh Bird & Biscuit, a new fast-casual spot from the Southerleigh Restaurant Group, will highlight a Southern favorite: fried chicken. With a well-rounded menu that includes biscuits, oysters and housemade brews and cocktails, locals are sure to pack into the new eatery when it opens at The Rim later this year.

Hook & Reel
Founded by an individual referred to as Mr. Miller, this East Coast chain highlights NOLA-style specialties such customizable seafood boils, sliders and baskets prepared with shrimp, crab, crawfish and scallops. The new eatery, located at 4903 Northwest Loop 410, will offer flavorful sides, brews, wine and cocktails.

La Panaderia, a homegrown chain from brothers José and David Cáceres, offers artisan-baked breads, pastries and savory entrees. Save room for mas conchas and tortas, as the brothers prepare to open their third location in North San Antonio this summer.

Owner Ricardo Ortiz is bringing great food and drinks together at 88 Social, a food truck park slated to open at 1009 Ave. B. Located between downtown San Antonio and the Historic Pearl, 88 Social will highlight local artists and culture with a variety of eats and cocktails.

One of Houston’s most celebrated barbecue spots is expected to open a second location at Weston Urban Park in 2020. Led by Pitmaster Grant Pinkerton, the downtown San Antonio location will offer classic favorites such as brisket, pulled pork and smoked sausage, in addition to Texas craft brews and spirits.

Best Quality Daughter
Tenko Ramen chefs Jennifer Dobbertin and Quealy Watson teamed up artist Jennifer Ling Datchuk to create immersive and delicious pop-up experiences in 2018 and 2019. Fast-forward two years later, and the creative trio is poised to open a new restaurant filled with thoughtful décor and imaginative dishes like smoked brisket shumai and twice-baked banana.

The Rio Grande Valley-based chain will open its first San Antonio location at 13527 Hausman Pass this spring. The chain offers more than a dozen tamal specialties including bean and cheese, spicy pork cooked in green sauce, and cream cheese and jalapeno, as well as classic menudo.

Smoke Shack BBQ
You don’t have to travel far for great Texas barbecue. Chris Conger’s Broadway restaurant Smoke Shack is slated to bring brews, BBQ and a full bar to San Antonio International Airport in 2020. Expect to see favorites from both the OG Smoke Shack and sister bar The Pigpen for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
