Among the more unusual events on the post-Mother's Day cultural calendar, “The MotherHouse” brings together five South Texas artists for a pop-up exhibition and installation addressing various “issues faced by mothers, such as labor/work, ambiguity, cultural expectation, media representation, and the tension and synergy at the intersection of care-taking and art-making.” Aiming to transform a home into a one-night-only exhibition space, the project encompasses video installation investigating the ritual of family meals (organizer/co-curator Brenda Burmeister), screen prints combining images and text commenting on motherhood (Julia Barbosa Landois), music boxes exploring “the moral messages of fairy tales” (Yuliya Lanina), humorous sculptural works (Emily Fleisher) and a fusion-minded performance piece created by Amber Ortega Perez in collaboration with writers Laurie Dietrich, Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson and Lisa Cortez Walden. Event proceeds benefit Casa RAICES, a shelter dedicated to serving women and children after release from family detention.
