The new Hendrix app for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod

Every year fans from all over the world travel to Greenwood Memorial Park to celebrate Jimi Hendrix's birthday November 27. Sony Music Entertainment and Experience Hendrix LLC have teamed up to commemorate the epic artist's birthday with the Jimi Hendrix — the Complete Experience App. The iOS 5 application, developed for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, is available for free from the iTunes App Store at

The app is ideal for both hardcore Hendrix fans and newbies just getting to know him. Users can start off by learning about Jimi's legacy by immersing themselves into the texts and images. Within the application you can sample the entire archived collection of Hendrix's albums, read about documentaries, and live performances all with purchasing options from iTunes. My favorite feature was the app's ability to synch to my Apple TV which then streams Hendrix videos directly to the flat screen.

The app takes advantage of iOS 5 technology by integrating a location-based mobile platform (similar to Foursquare) by notifying users when they are near areas of importance to the Hendrix legacy (the Alamo's centotaph only lights up for Ozzy. Sorry). And using an interactive map, users can get acquainted with iconic spots such as Electric Lady Studios and Experience Music Project Museum.

Even though the application is available for free, your device will require a direct internet connection to download the 20 MB app from the App Store.
