The Power of the Particular: Jordan Peele's Get Out and the Challenge to Universalizing Whiteness

Vanessa I. Corredera is an associate professor and chair of the Department of English at Andrews University. Her research focuses on race and representation in both early modernity and the era’s depictions in contemporary popular culture and performance. Her work has appeared in Early Modern Literary Studies, Shakespeare Quarterly, Borrowers and Lenders, Literature/FilmQuarterly, and The Journal of American Studies. Her forthcoming monograph with Edinburgh University Press, tentatively titled ‘Speak of Me As I Am’: Othello in Postracial America, investigates the way representations of race and gender in “post-racial,” American Othellos undertake either anti-black or anti-racist ideological work.
