Former Sam’s Burger Joint booker Jerry Clayworth continues to promote local shows, and he’s bringing a retro-futuristic double bill to the Josephine Theatre on Friday, March 13. The show’s headliner will be Austin avant-rock provocateurs Octopus Project, joined by SA’s better-living-through-synthesizers cartoon couple, Hyperbubble. All-ages show, $10 cover. Showtime is 8 p.m.
In what’s become a kind of pre-SXSW ritual for him, DJ Jester the Filipino Fistbrings his Waltz Across Texas mini-tour to San Antonio, along with two longtime pals: Joe Jack Talcum of the Dead Milkmen (one of Jester’s all-time favorite bands), and Canadian electro-chanteuse, Lederhosen Lucil. This triple feast comes to the Artpace rooftop for a free Luminaria Kick-off concert on Friday, March 13. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Waltz Across Texas is just one example of SA reaping the SXSW-week benefits of our proximity to Austin; next week will also see veteran Saddle Creek band Cursive promote its new album with a show at White Rabbit on Wednesday, March 18. Also, former Epoxies frontman Roxy Epoxy comes to town with her band, the Rebound, for a gig at Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar on Tuesday, March 17.
