Sax and clarinet master John Magaldi has been one of San Antonio’s leading health-insurance advocates for local musicians, and his Prime Time Jazz Orchestra will perform a benefit show for two in-need local jazz musicians, Ron Wilkins and Mike Pittsley ,at Blue Star Brewing Company (1414 S. Alamo) Friday, February 15. “I don’t know what it is about trombonists,” Magaldi says, in reference to Wilkins and Pittsley.

Wilkins was diagnosed with kidney disease late last year, and Magaldi took part in two January shows to help Wilkins with his medical bills: a gig at The Cove that raised nearly $1,500 and an all-day event at Luna that brought in an estimate $4,700.

The Blue Star concert will also provide help to Pittsley, a veteran of Jim Cullum’s band, who, according to Magaldi, took a low-wage job at a printing plant in order to cope with his wife’s exorbitant prescription-medication bills. The Prime Time Jazz Orchestra will be joined by Count Basie Orchestra drummer Butch Miles, as well as local vocalist Jackie Sotelo. Wilkins is also expected to sit in on some tunes. The “For the Love of a Trombonist” concert features sets at 7 and 9 p.m. Cover charge is $15. Call (210) 212-5506 for more details.
