THE SOUND & THE FURY

After 18 years of steady performing, jazz crooner Ken Slavin has decided to hang it up, at least temporarily. Slavin announced last week that he has given up his long-standing career aspirations, and will set aside music for at least a year.

Slavin, 46, has released four albums, including last year’s well-crafted I’ll Take Romance, but his inability to attract a record distributor, coupled with the disc’s slow sales, convinced him that he’d reached a career plateau. Moreover, the grind of non-stop gigging had begun to wear on him.

Slavin says he hopes to record again and will probably play the occasional concert, but he’ll no longer grapple with the business side of music. ...

A major highlight at SXSW will come from Saustex Media honcho Jeff Smith, who’s hosting “A Town South of Austin, a Friday, March 14 cross-generational showcase at Jovitas featuring Sexto Sol (with Spot Barnett), The Krayolas (with Augie Meyers), Shawn Sahm & the Tex-Mex Experience, Los #3 Dinners, Snowbyrd, and Girl in a Coma. ...

Casbeers will cater to those who can’t make it to Austin, with back-to-back stellar shows on March 12-13, featuring ace singer-songwriters Bobby Bare Jr. and Chuck Prophet.
