THE SOUND & THE FURY

Before there was a Tex-Mex supergroup known as the Texas Tornados, the name was used by a horn-driven band from San Antonio.

The group eventually changed its name to the West Side Horns — a moniker given to them by their frequent frontman Doug Sahm — and on Saturday, July 19, this uptown blues ensemble will celebrate its 25th anniversary under that name, with a showcase at Sam’s Burger Joint (330 E. Grayson).

Keyboardist Sauce Gonzalez attributes much of the group’s soulful chemistry to the wide range of musical experiences they’ve shared over a long period of time, playing (with and without Sahm) to audiences in Amsterdam, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Brazil, Cuba, and Japan. Gonzalez’s most cherished memory with the band is their concert with Sahm at Carnegie Hall. “That was the Super Bowl of all the gigs,” he says.

The group, which includes horn aces Al Gomez (trumpet), Spot Barnett (tenor sax), and Louis Bustos (tenor, baritone sax) will invite a parade of special guests from the local blues scene to join them at the anniversary performance. Showtime is 8 p.m.
