Local hard-rock juggernaut the Heroine will soon be heading to California for a gig with seriously high stakes. The group has been chosen as one of six finalists in the Guitar Center On-Stage competition, with prizes that include $25,000 in cash, $20,000 of Gibson gear, a management/record deal, and, most importantly, an opening slot on Mötley Crüe’s 2009 tour.

The band will perform at Hollywood’s famed Whisky A Go Go on Monday, November 10, with the members of the Crüe in attendance. Would opening with “Shout at the Devil” be considered bad form? …

Manny Castillo, drummer for Snowbyrd and executive director of San Anto Cultural Arts, underwent surgery for cancer on October 20 and, by all accounts, is making a strong recovery. Castillo, a driving force for community empowerment on the West Side and a musician known to his admirers as the “Keith Moon of San Antonio,” has encouraged his bandmates to continue gigging while he recuperates. The band canceled one show, but will play twice this week with fill-in drummer Chris Gavito (they’ll also receive some future help from Johnny Hernandez): Wednesday, October 29, at Casbeers and Friday, October 31, at Beethoven Maennerchor.
