THE SOUND & THE FURY

It might seem strange to say this, given all the municipal hype that accompanied the redevelopment of Main Plaza, but the downtown site’s free weekend concerts remain one of the better-kept secrets in SA. That thought hit home last Saturday when Los Texmaniacs played one of their usual ebullient shows (abetted by a beautiful Día de los Muertos installation from David Zamora Casas) to an appreciative but fairly sparse crowd.

On Saturday, November 8, Main Plaza hosts its biggest music event thus far, a 10-hour Latino Music Festival with a special emphasis on rootsy, traditional fare. Event headliners the Westside Horns, will be joined by SA music’s two greatest living heroes, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers. The festival will also include Sisters Morales, Azul, Piñata Protest, the Krayolas, Foxy y Chucho Conjunto, and a flamenco-dance showcase.

While we’re on the subject of the Westside Horns, we should note that they’ll be paying tribute to SA’s greatest deceased musical hero at the annual Doug Sahm Birthday Bash, at Casbeers on Thursday, November 6. The Horns will be special guests of the Krayolas, and the Sahm tribute show will also include performances from the Swindles and True Stories.
