Not the Government returned to SA in December for back-to-back shows at Sam’s Burger Joint and the Warhol, and the exhilarating havoc they stirred up reminded us how much we’ve missed this band since they relocated to Los Angeles in 2007.

In keeping with the back-to-their-roots spirit of the Alamo City homecoming, the post-punk quartet’s latest release is a literal return to their musical infancy as a home-studio recording experiment by founding members Wilton James and Brian Lieb. The record, an honest-to-goodness, seven-inch hunk of clear vinyl dubbed (with characteristic optimism) Let the Nightmare Begin, opens with two songs recorded by James and Lieb with guest drummers in 2003-04. Nightmare is available in a limited-edition run of 500 copies on local label Mookie Dog, and it’s an indispensable piece of the enigmatic, head-trip puzzle that is Not the Government. ...

Mnolo celebrates the release of his multi-artist production showcase, Collagist, at Limelight on Friday, January 30 with performances from Jeannette & Richard, Aly Tadros, Notes Floats, and the Word Association. Showtime is 10 p.m.
