The Sound & The Fury

SA band the Blend? has based its sound on the improvisational, psychedelicized blues of the late ’60s, which singer-guitarist Marc Smith suggests has been a necessity as much as an aesthetic choice: For most of the group’s history, Smith attended Texas A&M University and drove three hours to San Antonio for each gig, leaving the Blend? little time for rehearsal.

But it’s neither their sporadic practice schedule, nor the sense that these 20-somethings would forever be out of sync with their own generation’s tastes, that’s causing the group to split up after six years together.

“We’re not really jumping ship because it’s sinking,” Smith says. “We just see a good place to get off and we’ll let the ship go off by itself.”

The Blend? plays its final show Saturday, May 16, at Limelight, with Blowing Trees. Smith is already developing a bluesy new project called the Heavy Feathers. ...

Local hip-hop mainstay Louie Dollars has organized the second annual SA Hip-Hop Jam, which takes place on Saturday, May 16, at Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar, with performances from scene veterans Spooky G & Blackjack, the Underdog Turnablists, and DJ Spinner T. Showtime is 10 p.m.
