The Sound & the Fury

We should be excited about Lone Star beer’s Bash at the Brewery, but it’s just a little weird that four of the seven selected bands hail from Austin: Classic country crooner Dale Watson, femme rockers the Bluebonnets, surf-alt-country-folkman Bob Schneider and Americana darlings Band of Heathens crowd the stage Saturday at the mostly closed Lone Star Brewery (Lone Star Blvd and Mission Rd). The ultimate San Antonio band, Texas Tornados, gets a nod, as well. The band we bet will turn the most heads, though, is our own Hacienda. This Boerne-based family quartet caught the ear of the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach before they had even recorded a demo. Now they have two highly praised albums, their latest, the retro-rock Big Red and Barbacoa is still on heavy rotation on college radio. What’s that? You’ve never seen them play? Well, the group has been away for a while supporting acts like fellow San Antonio rising stars Girl in a Coma. “I think we’re on show 130 for the year,” says guitarist Dante Schwebel just before loading into a gig in Fargo, North Dakota last week. After their Bash appearance, the band takes off again to open for My Morning Jacket at New York City mega-venue Terminal 5, then it’s on to the CMJ festival in New York (“I hear it’s kind of like SXSW,” says Schwebel), before finally returning to San Antonio to record in their new home studio. Hacienda hopes to schedule a playdate here during their downtime before taking flight again.
