First performed in 1777, Irish satirist Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s comedy of manners The School for Scandal concerns a wealthy businessman who disguises himself as both a poor relative and a moneylender in order to determine which of his nephews deserves to inherit his massive fortune. Fueled by gossip, rumors and trickery, that 18th-century classic serves as loose inspiration for South African playwright Bernard J. Taylor’s original new farce Theatre for Scandal. Promising an amusing dose of metadrama, the play employs the exaggerated nature of theater itself to amplify chatter surrounding a flamboyant gay actor who’s rumored to be straight and plots to “wreak vengeance on a macho stud who has betrayed a female friend.” Dave Cortez directs Stephen Poer, Aaron Ramos, Aurora Chase, Jose DeHoyos, Jayme Seward, Jonathan Schell and Greg Hinojosa (in drag) in the world premiere.
