This historic Alamo Heights bungalow was once a farm house and lodging for WWII military wives

A stylish 1910 bungalow recently listed in Alamo Heights for just under $600,000 has colorful history that may not be obvious given its posh, inner-burbs location.

The home's original builders, a pair of brothers, tended cows, chickens, rabbits and goats at the site, according to a history supplied by the listing agent. During World War I, they even raised their own meat. Their barn still stands on the property, and an old water well from that era is still hidden under the deck near a hot tub.

During World War II, the same owners sectioned off a portion of their farm house and allowed women who were visiting their husbands at local military bases to obtain lodging.

Beyond its history, the two-bedroom, two-bath abode is packed with distinctive features, from a living room with a towering wood-burning fireplace and 21-foot cathedral ceilings to a modern spiral staircase and a stained glass imported from Amsterdam that adorns an office door.

This home is listed by Gina Candelario with Kuper Sotheby's International Realty.
