The 1998 cult classic Rushmore was not Wes Anderson’s feature directorial debut – that distinction goes to 1996’s Bottle Rocket – but it was, unquestionably, his arrival proper.

To date, the quirky dramedy remains one of the director’s most adored films and perhaps the best known among casual viewers unfamiliar with Anderson’s entire body of work. The movie follows the heroically eccentric, brilliant mess Max Fischer, played by Jason Schwartzman (in his debut), as he navigates his fancy prep school, engaging in all the extracurriculars, shrugging off academics and striking up a hilarious friendship with mogul Herman Blume (played by Bill Murray in top form).

You can catch an outdoor screening of the film that jump-started the acclaimed Austin auteur’s career this weekend as a part of Slab Cinema’s ongoing Wes Fest.
