'True Blood' Runs Out of Life

With the sixth season of the popular HBO show having ended last month with a lot of questions to be answered, the cable network has announced that next year’s seventh season will be its last. The series has taken us into Bon Temps and the world of vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, witches, and faeries and made household names of Sookie, Alcide and Vampire Eric.

Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, True Blood premiered in 2008 during a new awakening of the underworld genre and it was perfect for those of us who wanted a little more blood and guts than the teen fare Twilight had to offer. The hype was deafening and HBO delivered a knockout punch. Soon everyone was declaring Team Bill or Team Eric, none of that Jacob or Edward nonsense.

“From the moment I read Charlaine’s books, I thought there was potential for something really special,” says Alan Ball, who left the show as showrunner after season 5 to focus on his new series Banshee for HBO’s sister network, Cinemax.

In the press release, Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming, stated, “True Blood has been nothing short of a defining show for HBO. Alan Ball took the books by Charlaine Harris, assembled a brilliant cast led by the magnificent Anna Paquin in the role of Sookie Stackhouse, and crafted a show that has taken its many devoted fans on an unforgettable journey. Alan passed the baton to Brian Buckner, who led our fantastic writers and crew in crafting a spectacular sixth season, and he will lead us through the seventh and final season of this amazing show. Together with its legions of fans, it will be hard to say goodbye to the residents of Bon Temps, but I look forward to what promises to be a fantastic final chapter of this incredible show.”

The series has seen its ups and downs, I personally could have done with much less of the Marnie/coven storyline in season 4. However, season 6 did see a resurgence in the storytelling and took Sookie and our favorite vamps and co. on new unexpected journeys. So what does season 7 have in store for the mystical dwellers of Bon Temps? Who will Sookie spend happily ever, ever, ever after with? Will we see anymore of Eric? Does Jason have anymore saving left in him? What about Bill? Whatever happens, we’re hoping True Blood ends on a high note, obviously with lots of blood and guts.
