Uncolonized

A free screening of the 2018 short documentary film Uncolonized will take place August 23 at Our Lady of the Lake University. The film “takes a critical look at the historical experiences of native children inside of the U.S. public education system” by following a family who decides to homeschool their daughters, Natahney, 11, and Mimicah, 7, rather than send them to public school. Uncolonized also looks at the history of “Indian boarding schools” in the late 19th and early 20th centuries where native children were sent to assimilate them to Euro-American standards. “With our kids, we want the freedom for them to think for themselves, protect themselves and learn what they want to learn,” said Chasity, the young girls’ mother, in the film. The screening is sponsored by the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AITSCM), the mission of which is to “work for the preservation and protection of the culture and traditions of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation and other indigenous people of the Spanish Colonial Missions in South Texas and Northern Mexico through education, research, community outreach, economic development projects and legislative initiatives at the federal, state and local levels.”
