Manny Garcia, Texas Democratic Party deputy executive director, says Cruz will do anything in his pursuit of power.
“The fact is Cuban-American, Canadian-born Ted Cruz will lie, do, and say anything to gain power," Garcia says in a statement. “Months ago, Gov. Abbott capitalized on President Obama’s actions to open Cuban markets to American companies. Cruz was suddenly mum. After all, Cruz needed Abbott’s endorsement to hold off the Trump train in Texas.”
Last December, Abbott traveled to Cuba on a trade mission, which, in itself is strange, because it was Obama who softened up relations enough for Abbott to make the trip to pitch Texas when, and if, the trade embargo with Cuba is lifted, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
At the time, Cruz had nothing to say about Abbott's trip. Cruz opposes softening relationships with Cuba.
In a Politico op-ed, Cruz says Obama has turned his back on political prisoners languishing in Cuba's prisons.
The White House keeps saying that this trip will chart a new course for people-to-people relations, but all that Obama’s appeasement of the Castro dictatorship has done so far is create a channel for inside deals between large corporations and the Cuban military, which holds all the keys to the island’s economy. The effect will not be liberalization but rather the institutionalization of the Communist dictatorship as the profits from this détente will line the pockets not only of Fidel and Raul Castro, but also of Raul’s son, Alejandro Castro Espin.Cruz goes on at great length in the opinion piece that casts Obama in a dark, devious light, seeing the president in bed with dictators and torturers, for his trip to Cuba.
Corporate cronyism, meet communist totalitarianism.
But when it came to Abbott, silence. You'd think a man with such conviction for fighting the evil communists in Cuba who beat his father up, wouldn't keep those closely held, self-identifying beliefs quiet when the sitting governor of Texas visited the communist government.
So a Texas Republican is allowed to visit an oppressive regime without righteous admonishment from Cruz, but the president of the United States is not?
