Margaret Edson’s Wit, which won her the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1999, is part savvy literary journey and part intelligent, touchingly humorous end-of-life saga. When Vivian Bearing, a highly regarded professor of English, is diagnosed with terminal cancer, she, like so many in her position, looks to the work that has filled her life. As she evaluates her life’s work, particularly focusing on John Donne’s metaphysical poetry, she both reveals and recreates herself through the complexities of the English language — finding perspective, hope and a surprising amount of ... well ... wit in the process. This weekend marks the opening of this celebrated play at The Public Theater of San Antonio (formerly The Playhouse). Check the theater’s website for additional dates through March 11.
