Women's History Month at SAMA

As part of its mission to address gender imbalance in the art world and highlight “the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities,” Washington D.C.’s National Museum of Women in the Arts launched the social media campaign #5WomenArtists during Women’s History Month in 2016. In essence a test of knowledge (can you name five women artists?), the campaign zeroes in on women artists of color this year, reinforced with a broadening network of nearly 400 participating organizations and museums, including the San Antonio Museum of Art. Kicked off Tuesday with a spotlight on African-American artist Martine Syms’ video installation Laughing Gas, which the museum acquired earlier this year, SAMA’s #5WomenArtists series continues with a lunchtime tour focusing on works by Latina artists Margarita Cabrera and Irma Palacios ($5, 12:30-1pm Thu); a discussion with Spanish artist Maider López, whose videos, performance works and installations often interrupt “norms in space and architecture” (free, 6:30-7:30pm Tue); and a gallery talk highlighting the work of Terrell James, a Houston-based abstract painter represented in the museum’s collection ($5, 6:30-7pm Tue).
