Hip-hop fans may want to take note that Memphis rapper Young Dolph is blazing through town this weekend. If you’re not familiar with his work, you might be tempted, based on his membership in the dubious — and seemingly endless — club of rappers calling themselves “Young This” or “Lil That,” to write him off as another mumble rapper: all posture and no purpose. But that would be a serious mistake. In actuality, Young Dolph is a nimble and hardened street storyteller with an eye for dark, and even emotional, details that could only have been honed by living the life he raps about. He’s also prolific as hell. Since dropping his first mixtape in 2008, he’s released five full-lengths, including last year’s rad Role Model, and nearly 20 mixtapes.
