(Or, sure, Saturday also, but how often do you get to do the monster-truck-guy voice about an actual monster truck show happening on a “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!”?) Witness some of the biggest damn trucks you ever saw in your life aggressively fighting for dominance like skunk apes in heat. Then after you’ve found a spot in the parking lot, head inside the Alamodome and watch 10,000 pound leviathans with names like El Toro Loco, War Wizard, and freaking Grave Digger give the owners of the jacked-up crew cabs outside brand new inferiority complexes, wreaking methanol-fueled havoc in races and audience-judged stunt competitions that are sure to produce veritable buttloads of both sound and fury. Fri 1/12Los Texmaniacs with Flaco Jiménez, Garrett T. Capps If you’re bummed the cold or the crowds scared you out of your chance to catch living legend Flaco Jiménez downtown on New Year’s Eve, here’s a chance to start 2018 off on a redemptive note. The conjunto/Tejano luminary and accordion GOAT will perform, as he often does, with fellow Grammy-winning act Los Texmaniacs. The special show, in the heart of The Strip, will go down as a part of an event called “Texagave,” which will feature free food and a focus on various drinks made with agave-based booze. To top it all off, Garrett T. Capps will also perform with his latest outfit The Three Timers, adding a dash of his South Texas country/rock vibes to what promises to be a stellar sampling of San Anto sounds and spirits. $15, 8pm, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. Sat 12/9 ‘Doing Werk’ “Werk. Hustle. Sleep. Repeat.” That’s the motto of artist Raul Gonzalez, whose drawings, prints and dance performances often center on the idea of work and physical labor. First exhibited at Austin’s grayDUCK Gallery in November, Gonzalez’s solo show “Doing Werk” comes to Freight Gallery for Second Saturday. In this latest series, Gonzalez draws from his experiences as a stay-at-home father as well as working constructions jobs with his own father. Included in this show are the artist’s paintings on concrete fragments (taken from actual construction sites) depicting workers in action. In the accompanying exhibition catalog, Gonzalez explains, “No one walks up to these workers and says ‘Thank you for the road,’ or for the basic infrastructure that keeps the nation safe and mobile.” Challenging preconceived notions about what it means to be an artist and the son of Mexican immigrants, Gonzalez’s work is also an homage to the overworked and underpaid everyman. Fri 11/24 - Sun 11/26 The Nutcracker Ballet San Antonio once again brings the perennial holiday favorite The Nutcracker to the Tobin for 12 performances with live accompaniment of the Tchaikovsky score provided by the San Antonio Symphony. Inspired by the classic E.T.A. Hoffmann tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, reality and fantasy blend in a young girl’s dreams of a handsome prince, frightening rodents at war and exotic characters from around the globe. This production debuted just last season, choreographed by artistic director Willy Shives. The sparkling production blends Shives’ artistic vision with that of the legendary Gerald Arpino, utilizing the great maestro’s choreography for The Land of Snow and Waltz of the Flowers variations. Arpino was the co-founder of Joffrey Ballet and a tremendous mentor to Shives during his many years with that company. In this family-friendly fare, more than 100 children from the community will join the dancers of the company along with local celebrities making surprise cameo appearances. Sat 11/18 Texas Body Paint Competition Since its launch in 2010, Beyond the Canvas has grown into an arts organization associated with nearly 100 body painters, special effects artists, models, photographers and other creative types. Founded by art and music enthusiast Tomas Vasquez and sponsored by the Avenida Guadalupe Association, the collective regularly comes together for showcases, competitions and special events in San Antonio (as well as Louisiana, South Carolina, Georgia and New York) and also works with area charities such as the Believe It Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to “the inclusion of kids with physical challenges into the lives and experiences of their typical peers.” Through their outreach efforts with the Believe It Foundation, BTC has touched the lives of kids like 18-year-old Xavier Sanchez. Born without arms or legs, Sanchez recently visited the Beyond the Canvas studio and found a new level of confidence after being transformed with body paint. Following a theme of “Dreams and Delusions,” the outfit’s 10th annual Texas Body Paint Competition brings together 25 body paint artists and 25 “live canvases” for a creative battle with guest judges from the reality series Skin Wars, performances by hoop artists, the Afro-Brazilian troupe Capoeira Luanda and stand-up comic Cleto Rodriguez, and more than $1,000 in cash prizes. $25-$50, 7pm-midnight, Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe St., (210) 271-3151, beyondthecanvas.org. — BR

Sun 11/12 Ministry In the first of hopefully many shows to catch in SA from the tragic cancellation of Sound On Sound Fest, The Aztec Theatre has swooped up headlining industrial metal act Ministry. That’s right – good ‘ol Al Jourgensen (who’s now 59) and the boys are headed to the Alamo City on Sunday, November 12 to deliver their grinding industrial tracks to a city that’s been pretty supportive of the group since their rise to fame in the mid-’80s and early-’90s. And even with the continued lineup changes, the death of guitarist Mike Scaccia and Jourgensen’s battle with drug addiction (he’s been sober since checking into rehab earlier this year), Ministry is one of the few bands from industrial early-’90s peak that has continued to stay relevant. $29-$98, 7pm, The Aztec Theatre, 104 N. Thu 11/2 - Sat 11/4, Muertitos Fest For its 11th annual Muertitos Fest, a culturally relevant celebration of art, life, and death, the staff and students of SAY Sí will be presenting three days of activities/displays including “student art, altars to honor the departed, family folk art workshops, food booths, an artisan mercado as well as live cultural performances highlighting local dancers, musicians and entertainers.” This year’s fest, which takes the Mexican Revolution as its theme, will also include the revealing of two large-scale sculptures created over the summer in collaboration with Colectivo Ultima Hora, a talented team of artists from Mexico City. Proceeds from the opening night of Muertitos Fest, the only day for which there’s a cover charge, will benefit SAY Sí’s efforts to foster students’ “artistic and social skills in preparation for higher educational advancement and professional careers.” Aside from all the student performers and artists, the fest will also features musical performances from talented local acts Chisme, Grupo Frackaso and Chulita Vinyl Club.
