Young Widows’ new record is a compilation of golden points spliced and fused from live performances. Old Wounds’ channeling of the tendencies of classic noise and rock bands is well-crafted and smart. Inexorably steeped in the entropy of early Shellac, the slightly sludgy album opener “Took a Turn” slowly grinds the vocals down to a sharp point by way of abrasive guitar and steady, dense bass lines. Evan Patterson’s aggressive bays on “Old Skin” bow to the classic Yow barks teeming through the Jesus Lizard’s canon, but still carve something new. The trio infuses each song with shards of guttural guitar work and Jeremy McMonigle’s rip-heavy drums, careening through each song, and compounding the record’s impact. “Lucky and Hardheaded” and “Delay Your Pressure” exude early Black Flag qualities, raising the bar and coaxing the bass and drums into a darkly melodic, yet vibrant push-pull, forcing listeners to navigate through those yawning ravines alone.
