Girl in a Coma

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2008-09-24

We’re already losing Girl in a Coma, but we don’t have to let go just yet. Despite the female trio’s stint on the Van’s Warped tour and posh gigs opening for Morissey, Frank Black, and Joan Jett, despite releasing their excellent debut, 2007’s Both Before I’m Gone, on Jett’s own Blackheart label, Girl in a Coma still rep Taco Town, and even play here every once in a while. They’re already one of our music scene’s most poorly kept secrets, and a band this freakishly good (witness guitarist/frontwoman Nina Diaz’s vocal control on “Say,” the rhythm section’s deceptively complicated ass drag on “Road to Home”) is destined to flee flyover country soon enough.

Check out the video for “Clumsy Sky,” in which Nina somehow invites legitimate comparisons to Leslie Feist, Karen O, and Billie Holliday — sometimes within the same damn phrase — while her sister Phanie flips out on the bass in the background, and tell me they aren’t destined to become the most famous comatose gals since Sunny von Bülow (apologies for the out-of-date name drop, but a Terri Schiavo reference seemed in bad taste). Actually, don’t check out their MySpace page, because each hit brings them dangerously closer to their 1 millionth page view, after which, rumor has it, GIAC will vanish into the fabled realm of Tila Tequila.

If you miss them Friday, you’ll have to wait until November 15 for another shot. And between the two local dates, a nationwide tour with Tegan & Sarah is sure to bring them even more attention, and more fans, and even more out-of-town tour dates. Sigh.

$10, all ages, 7 p.m. Friday, Sep 26, Jacks Patio Bar & Grill, 2950 Thousand Oaks, (210) 494-2309.
