Posted on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 4:00 AM

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2008-10-29

SA’s 27-year-old printmaking cooperative StoneMetal Press hosts a black-and-white ball for the South Texas art set this Saturday. The entrance fee covers a chicken-mole buffet and dessert, music, dancing, door prizes — and most valuable of all, a gallery talk by artist and Cornyation backbone Ray Chavez, and a slide presentation by Terry Ybañez on the work of influential 19th-century Mexican illustrator and engraver José Guadalupe Posada, whose iconic calaveras are inseparable from Día de los Muertos en los EEUU. Come support and celebrate the organization that gave SA its first international art fest (Hand-Pulled Prints) and continues to evolve the lithographic, etc. arts. Wear black-and-white in honor of Posada’s calaveras, and study up on StoneMetal’s founding in Catherine Walworth’s 2004 profile, “One stone (and press) at a time,” online at sacurrent.com. $20 advance, $25 door, 6-9 pm Saturday, November 1, Stonemetal Press, 1420 S. Alamo, Ste. 101, (210) 227-0312, stonemetal-press.com.
