Genre: Latin

Colombian music icons Aterciopelados (which translates as “the velvety ones”) follow up their Latin Grammy winning Oye with a genre-busting disc that finds singer Andrea Echeverri in top form. Recorded in the band’s hometown of Bogotá, the album has an organic sound that mixes up a tasty stew of eclectic global rhythms. Echeverri’s socially conscious vibe and folksy demeanor stand in stark contrast to her compatriot Shakira’s more lightweight fare.

Bassist/co-writer Hector Buitrago is a force, laying down dynamic rhythm arrangements for Echeverri’s voice to dance around. The lead single and title track opens the album with a call to action for the protection of Colombia’s bodies of water, while “Bandera” speaks out on immigration issues over a hard-charging bluesy groove that makes a body move. The vocals are in Spanish, but the emotion and the beats are universal.
