Critic's Pick Release Date: 2008-11-26

Celebrating the tradition of open-air markets found throughout the world, the Esperanza’s Mercado de Paz brings people together as a community, dispelling the idea that the perfect holiday gift has to be found in a retail marketplace filled with corporate clones. The Peace Market connects shoppers with more than 90 local and international artisans and merchants who sell unique handmade gifts centered around themes of peace, social justice, cultural diversity, and ecological concerns. Last year more than 6,000 shoppers attended, taking away unique gifts as well as new ways to support social-justice efforts. Arte, food vendors, and live music will spill out into the street, and an hourly raffle offers prizes donated by artists. Also, mark your calendars for Bazar Sabado — the original San Antonio holiday market hits the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 13. SAMA’s industrious shoppers have been traveling the globe buying worldly merch to fill your holiday gift bags; look for colorful textiles from Guatemala, jade jewelery and clothing from China, Mexican silver jewelry, and more. Mercado de Paz: Free, 10am-6pm Friday & Saturday, November 28 & 29, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, 922 San Pedro, (210) 228-0201.
