If that jacket with the enormous feather epaulets frontman Brandon Flowers has been sporting is any indication, the Killers are ready to take flight after delivering the less-than-soaring Sam’s Town in 2006.

Their schizophrenic tracks of late map a journey to redefine the band ever since critics mocked Flowers’ British affectations on Hot Fuss. Flowers reemerged on Sam’s Town with a Lou Reed looseness to his vocals, rumpling the Killers’ otherwise polished sound, and this newfound voice remains on Day & Age. But the music veers from Sam’s Town’s anthems to the retro appeal of Hot Fuss, giving listeners the best of both Killers.

Fans will get their “Mr. Brightside” fix with “Spaceman” and “A Dustland Fairytale,” both sprinkled with more keyboards than the band has indulged in lately. And those who like their Killers mercurial will be pleased with the dabbling in cacophonous rhythms and horns on the album’s closing tracks.
