The Big Spill '09

Posted on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 4:00 AM

Release Date: 2009-03-11

If you can’t make it to Austin for the South by Southwest music festival (or don’t like that $695 price tag), that’s just too bad. You can’t expect to sit on your ass and wait for all these acts to come to you; that’s not how life works, especially not in San Antonio. Well, OK, in this one isolated incident, it turns out that’s exactly how life works.

The first-ever Big Spill festival, hosted by Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar and the Warhol, will bring several of the SXSW showcase bands to San Antonio this week and the next for 10 days of concerts. Expectedly, the larger fest’s highest-profile acts won’t be making the trip down here, but while you won’t hear Devo, Bun B, or Grizzly Bear disturbing the peace on Avenue B, SA will get some face time with notable acts such as Atlanta’s Gringo Starr, Montreal’s King Khan & the Shrines, and Brooklyn’s Tigercity, along with local acts such as Piñata Protest and Snowbyrd. Admission to individual shows is $8, and all-access wristbands, good for the entire 10-day fest, are available for $50. $8-$50, Sat, Mar 14 – Mon, Mar 23, Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar, 1033 Ave B, The Warhol, 1011 Avenue B,
