Mexico City DJ and record-label exec Camilo Lara’s third MIS album continues to mix electro, hip-hop, dub, and several genres of Latin American music in ever-inventive ways. Cumbias, boleros, and mariachi tunes are sampled and swirled with beats, grooves, and spoken word for a distinctive sonic pastiche. Lara owns more than 45,000 albums, a quantity reflected in the diverse mix of sounds on the album.

Rock’s a prevalent influence, too. “Karate Kid 2” features a Sublime-style groove while “Sinfonia Agridulce” bites the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony.” Lara also calls in a little help from his friends. Café Tacuba guitarist Joselo Rangel guests on “Hiedra Venenosa” and “Alocatel,” both of which recall his own band’s upbeat, funky work. Mexican pop star Paty Cantú sings on “White Stripes,” and her sultry voice spices up Lara’s electro groove. The Beastie Boys’ Ad Rock contributes a bonus-track remix of “Alocatel,” which takes on a harder New York edge.

Catch MIS live at the Pachanga Festival in Austin Saturday, May 30.
