Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-06-17

They’re not training a tiger to pilot a stealth bomber, but Museo Alameda will celebrate its new exhibition, American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, in the second-coolest way possible: free concerts. Saturday’s show, featuring Brownout, DJ Scuba Gooding, and Mexican Stepgrandfather (above), is the first of three daylong festivals in honor of “the first interpretive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music.” The exhibit lists San Antonio (along with LA, New York City, San Francisco, and Miami) as one of five major cultural centers for Latino popular music after World War II. That’s company SA doesn’t usually get to keep, but 30-plus hours of free kick-ass music in Market Square should cure anybody’s inferiority complex. Free, noon-10pm, Sat, Jun 20, Museo Alameda, 101 S. Santa Rosa, thealameda.org.
