The soundtrack for pseudo-indie rom-com (500) Days of Summer spans the emotional range of a complex romantic relationship – from radiant joy (Hall & Oates’ "You Make My Dreams") to bittersweet confusion (Carla Bruni "Quelqu’un M’a Dit"). Those who fear mush shouldn’t worry though: It’s a soundtrack absent of the worst "ness"es (cheesi-, sugari-, sappi-). The opening track, Mychael Danna’s "A Story of Boy Meets Girl," insists that this film is not a love story at all, but Regina Spektor’s affectionate, dreamy "Us" immediately refutes the claim. Many of the songs are classics from way-back by groups such as the the Smiths and the aforementioned Hall & Oates, but the collage is completed with the modern flare of the Black Lips and the Temper Trap. The film’s emotional baseline is laid thick. All that’s needed from the film itself are a few small details – the visuals and maybe even some plot.
