Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-08-05

Local designer and face fixer John McBurney unveils a 12-month street-inspired collection this weekend that reminds us necessity is the mother of fashion, too. McBurney is a makeup artist by trade with a celebrity-rich resume, but locally, he’s long been famous for his brilliant Cornyation costumes (this year it was those crazy, unforgettable babies; in 2007 he designed yours truly’s Marie Antoinette-meets-cotton-candy King Anchovy wig) and the popular Glamarama: The Legends of Drag fundraiser at Jump-Start (above). “Designers such as Christian Lacroix, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow have always inspired me in my designs,” McBurney wrote in an email, but they don’t inspire his pocketbook — McBurney’s a savant at that old theater skill of making magic with stardust and paste. In 2007, he received the Robert L. B. Tobin Award for Costume Design; come marvel at how he put the grant to use.
