The full-length debut from San Antonio’s Kick It! takes its title from a few of Alamo City’s finest gay clubs, but the tracks are too scruffy for a respectable dance floor. Take, for example, their cover of Madonna’s Abba-via-diet-Depeche-Mode ass-mover “Hung Up.” The Kick It! take retains the original’s infectious rhythm thanks to drummer Ernesto Olivo’s high-speed hi-hat, but keyboardist Jeremy Rhodes’s vocals push the Auto-Tune effects into Stephen Hawking mode, and the band’s live instrumentation takes the melody behind the dumpsters and roughs it up a little. Opener “Hold Back,” with guitarist Echo Diaz and Rhodes’s boy/girl vocals and resonant guitar hooks might pass for shoegaze if you weren’t looking up to figure out what the hell is going on at every time change. “Glory Hole” drenches military man love with a synth-blasted surf-rock typhoon, and “Gay Thunder” wrangles experimental noise with a bouncing Western swing, but the instrumentation gets upstaged by guitarist Genevieve Rodriguez’s theatrical delivery. More straight-ahead rockers such as “The Times” and “LP” suffer some without the energy of the band’s live presence, but until the band starts touring more widely, H20SP is a suitable substitute for the rest of the world.
