Beauty and the Beast

Ever wonder why Beauty and the Beast is the “tale as old as time?” While the publication of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s La Belle et le Bete dates only to 1765, the story was a pre-existing fairy tale. An English translation appeared in 1757, as well as a French opera in 1771. When Broadway adopted the questionable habit of looking to movie screens for “new” inspiration, Disney’s 1991 version of Beauty and the Beast was an obvious choice – it not only won Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song, it was the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Picture.
