Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-12-16

¡Feliz cumpleaños! The House on Mango Street, the breakout novel from San Antonio’s most famous writer-in-residence, Sandra Cisneros, turned 25 this year. To celebrate, Cisneros has been giving readings of the novel (still required on high-school syllabuses nationwide), notably on NPR in April and most recently for Mark Twain Middle School’s coalition of Literary Ladies on December 9. Cisneros arrived for that event in a leopard-print limousine and matching outfit (even her dog, Chamaco, sported a spotted sweater) to promote the celebration of yet another anniversary — her 55th birthday. The party is December 20 at Luna Live, and Cisneros requests that you, too, mark the occasion in your best Tongolele getup. More importantly though, she asks you RSVP for the party (including performances by Rodolfo Lopez, the Krayolas with the West Side Horns, and Jose Ruben De Leon `above`) with a $55 donation to her Macondo Foundation for writers interested in “community building and nonviolent social change.” Get on it. That’s a small, tax-deductible, price to pay to be part of Cisneros’s latest coming-of-age story. $55 (suggested donation to 7pm Sunday, Dec 20, Luna Live, 6740 San Pedro, — Jeremy Martin
