Author Jared Diamond is one of those intimidatingly intelligent people who seem capable of practically anything. For starters, he speaks English, Latin, French, Greek, German, Spanish, Russian, Finnish, Indonesian, Italian, and several more bizarre languages. Using aspects of anthropology, ecology, and evolutionary biology, Diamond began writing books in 1991. Of his published works, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies is best known — it won Diamond a Pulitzer Prize and inspired a National Geographic Society-produced documentary which aired on PBS in 2005. Diamond, who is currently a geography professor at UCLA, will speak about his most recent book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed — a study of vanished societies including Easter Island and Angkor Wat — as part of Trinity’s DeCoursey Lecture Series. Free, 7:30pm (doors open at 6:45pm), Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium, One Trinity Place, (210) 999-8201, trinity.edu
