Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-05-19

We personally would never disparage our local law enforcement, who, as far as we’re concerned, are heroes, each and every one, and deserve limitless lifetimes full of joy and not pulling over music critics to search their cars. That said, you still have to admire the blue-ribbon-winning low-hanging fruit that must be dangling between the legs of dudes willing to name their band Millions of Dead Cops — a good decade before Body Count’s “Cop Killer” caused a national controversy, no less. MDC began in 1979 as the Stains — along with the Dicks and Big Boys one of Austin’s prototypical hardcore bands, releasing songs with titles like “Born to Die” and “John Wayne Was a Nazi.” In the early ’80s, they relocated to San Francisco — where we’re guessing talking shit about the recently deceased Duke went over a hell of a lot better — and changed their name to you-know-what. They dropped their sort-of self-titled debut (we say “sort-of” because the band has toyed with the acronym over the years, also claiming MDC stands for: Millions of Dead Children, Multi-Death Corporations, Millions of Damn Christians, etc.) in 1982, and the album has since been recognized as a watershed moment for both hardcore and pissing people off just ’cause you think it’s funny. The lineup has changed many times in the past few decades, and the group has since re-relocated to Portland, but the current touring band comprises all the originals with the exception of bassist Mikey Donaldson, who died in 2007. So go pay tribute to some true punk-rock old-schoolers, but if you buy an MDC bumper sticker at the show, you better make sure your registration’s up to date and both your taillights work. $10, 8pm Thu, May 20, Zombies, 12285 Nacogdoches, (210) 590-7757, zombiesliveinsa.com
