Art opening: Fire in the Belly

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-02

Blue Star unveils its new experimental satellite space on lower Broadway this month with Fire in the Belly, a group show culled from San Antonio’s many fine college art departments. “We were thinking there would be four or five students we would highlight,” said Blue Star Executive Director Bill FitzGibbons. “But the exhibitions committee went to eight colleges, and we ended up with something like 40 students.”

Good thing the new location is 2,000 square feet. It’s also located next door to woodsmith Peter Zubiate’s showroom, two doors down from sculptor George Schroeder, and an easy block’s walk from Public Art San Antonio’s new exhibition space — a power grid for a downtown arts nexus. FitzGibbons says the new gallery will give Blue Star “a little more flexibility when interesting work happens.” He’s already collecting proposals from artists and curators who’d like to work in the space, and they may collaborate with Schroeder to show public video work through the latter’s large front windows.

The current plan is to rotate shows every two-and-a-half to three months, and to schedule openings out of sync with the main campus. But for this First Thursday debut, the Blue Star Brewery bus will be making the circuit, taking riders from South Alamo to Broadway, where you can also trot over to PASA’s opening before catching the bus back. Fire in the Belly, Free, 6-9pm Thursday, 114 Broadway.
