Art Opening: Jason Reed and Melissa Wilkinson

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-02

The UTSA Satellite Space seems to have a knack for crunching two exhibitions into one space. Although the work shown on one side of the gallery doesn’t always relate to whatever’s in the other room, lately it’s been fitting together nicely — mentally and/or visually. Melissa Wilkinson, who teaches art at McLennan Community College in Waco, uses images collected from Google as the bones for paintings and drawings that, although collaged in nature, are fluidly remixed landscapes. Wilkinson’s body of work is aptly titled Things Fall Apart. The landscape maintains a purer form in the work of Jason Reed, who’s an assistant professor at Texas State University in San Marcos. For Topophilia West, Reed created an “emblematic map” by photographing homes, memorials, and personal objects in West Texas and New Mexico. Free, 6-9pm, UTSA Satellite Space, 115 Blue Star, (210) 212-7146.
