Gregg Allman

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-02

First off: the Gregg Allman Band is not the Allman Brothers Band.

“Everybody in the Brothers has their own band on the side,” explains Allman. “There’s only one head chef, and when it comes to material it’s no holds barred. You can play anything you want to. … If you think it up you can play it.”

Though the lead vocalist and piano man for the Southern rock gods will be playing some of his most famous compositions such as “Whipping Post” and “Statesboro Blues,” he says both have been arranged in significantly different ways. He’s previously gone so far as to describe their take on “Whipping Post” as having a reggae feel.

The most drastic difference in a Gregg Allman Band show is probably “less improvised jamming” in favor of a more “Stax Records sort of sound.” He’s stacked his band with ringers — accomplished blues musicians with lengthy resumes. Pianist Bruce Katz, for example, who’s cut albums with the likes of John Hammond, Big Mama Thornton, and David “Fathead” Newman, and is good enough at his job to let Allman feel confident in stepping away from the keys to play rhythm guitar about half the time. Maybe this show will go better with a flask of bourbon than the shrooms that have become his other band’s logo (the man himself is keeping clear of both these days, BTW), but it’s practically guaranteed to kick Allman levels of ass just the same.
