GWAR, Dirge Within, Mobile Death Camp

Posted on Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 4:00 AM

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-02

GWAR, which does not stand for “Gay Women Against Rape,” or “God What an Awful Racket” (or really anything at all), is celebrating 25 years of gory, comedic thrash metal with a two-year tour in support of Lust in Space, their 11th studio album. These elaborately costumed flesh-eating monsters from outer space are dedicated to destroying the human race with raucous performances that comment on politics and pop culture through mock executions — they’ve been known to disembowel Paris Hilton onstage — that leave the audience soaked with a variety of simulated bodily fluids (made from a harmless mixture of food coloring and either water or carrageenan). Although “Front-thing” Oderus Urungus, who is also an “Interplanetary Correspondent” for the FOX News show Red Eye, would love to see some fresh meat in GWAR’s “slave pit,” the San Antonio Heavy Metal Examiner advises newcomers to store valuables in a Ziploc — and wear a white shirt to take home as a blood-soaked badge of honor. $20-$22, 8pm, the White Rabbit, 2410 N. St. Mary’s, (210) 737-2221, sawhiterabbit.com.
