Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-02

One can only hope William Shakespeare would’ve approved of all the various mutations Romeo and Juliet has undergone since his possible death in 1616. After all, Shakespeare’s play (published in 1597) borrows heavily from (and adds characters to) Arthur Brooke’s The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet (1562) and William Painter’s Palace of Pleasure (1582), both of which are based on an ancient Italian tale. So, why shouldn’t the Magik Theatre employ a bit of poetic license for its production of the Bard’s tragic romance? Director Melissa Marlowe’s remix for 2010 sets Romeo and Juliet in 1920s San Antonio, with the star-crossed lovers belonging to families with rival theater companies. Unless you’re planning on wooing your sweetheart at Wednesday’s VIP opening-night performance (includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvre, and reserved seating), Shakespeare in the Park presents a perfectly free date-night option under the stars. Wednesday: $25, Thursday-Saturday: free, gates open at 6:30pm, performances begin at 8pm, San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston, (210) 227-2751, magiktheatre.org, sabot.org.
