Art opening: Danqing Coldwell

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-09-01
It’s a monster weekend, you guys. We don’t know if we’re ready to handle it. There are a metric ton of truly worthwhile shows opening on Thursday and Friday, and as it’s no longer muffin-baking temperature outside (as of print time), so why not go out and engage? Among the local heavy-hitters, though, the work of Danqing Coldwell shores up Joan Grona’s reputation as a gallerist tuned into contemporary Chinese art. Coldwell, a Beijing-born, Tokyo-educated painter, builds complex neo-cubist figural scenes which, I hear tell, are inspired by traditional Chinese poetry. In her artist statement, she quotes “You hear the commotions in the silence and you see the universe in the void.” In her paintings — this marks her second solo show at Ms. Grona’s — she works a combination of mass density and delicacy.
